Difference Between 48 Frame & 56 Frame Pump
How do you tell the difference between a 48 frame and a 56 frame hot tub pump?
Hot tub pumps typically come in two different frame sizes: 48 frame and 56 frame. When replacing a hot tub pump, it is important to replace it with the same size pump so that the holes and plumbing will line up. Note that many spa pump wet ends can be rotated in 90 degree increments to accommodate various plumbing layouts.

The main difference between a 48 frame and a 56 frame hot tub pump is that the 48 frame has a smaller motor housing and so the 4 through bolts that fasten the wet end to the motor are closer together on the smaller motor.
Measuring between through bolts on a 48 frame motor yields a measurement of about 3 9/16" where the distance between consecutive through bolts (not across diagonal) on the larger 56 frame pump measures about 4 1/8".
